 Twisted Sister - "Still Hungry."
« Thread Started on Dec 8, 2004, 2:12pm »

One of my favourite bands of the 80's (and still are) has to be Twisted Sister.
There was nobody quite like Dee Snider, man could he talk...and as for swearing?
He could make the toughest of sailors blush.
Yet instead of being offensive, it was always came across as (intentionally) funny.
I caught Twisted Sister on their "Come Out and Play" tour in Manchester, UK.
When the lights dimmed and the tape stopped repeating "come out and play...Twisted Sister!," the band appeared, Dee being the human dynamo that only he can be, made it from one end of the stage to the other within a blink, stopping only to shout into the microphone "Good evening Man-f**king- chester! We are Twisted f**king Sister!!!"
From anybody else, that would've sounded pathetic, yet from him, it sounded funny as hell.
Afterwards I was lucky enough to meet him and to my surprise, was not met by a foul mouthed lunatic, but a very courteous, softly spoken gentleman.
One of their best albums, if not the best, was "Stay Hungry."
Each song a real foot stomper, although it did sound a lot less heavier than the previous two albums, "You Can't Stop Rock 'n' Roll" and "Under The Blade."
But that was unfortunately a sign of the (MTV friendly) times.
As light as it was, it was still a classic album from a band at their peak.
Unfortunately, after a couple of inferior albums in "Come Out and Play" and "Love Is For Suckers," the band split never to regain their past glories.
Now though, Twisted Sister have reformed to the delight of fans everywhere.
One of their first taks was to right a wrong.
That is to completely re-record the "Stay Hungry" album into what they originally wanted it to sound like.
No, I didn't say "remix," they have started from scratch and re-recorded it, as well as adding two unfinished songs from the "Stay Hungry" sessions (now completed), reworked versions of four songs from their club days and the reuinion single.
Does it sound any better or different you ask?
Oh hell yes!!!
For a start, the production is far better, Dee always hated the production Tom Werner gave the original version of the album, even though it did go onto make them the legends that they became.
So, reworking a classic album is either an extremely brave move or a very stupid one, personally, I think the former.
The songs now sound far "meatier," as well as louder and heavier.
Although, Dee has lost some of the range in his voice, I consider this to be of benefit to the new sound the songs have, it compliments them perfectly.
Most of the songs, like "Stay Hungry" and "Burn In Hell" for example, are just heavier versions, although a few have new solos in them.
The songs that inspired Dee's self penned horror movie, "Strangeland," are vast improvements.
"Horror Teria: Captain Howdy" now does sound creepy and "Street Justice" does sound bitter.
In the end, what it comes down to is if you own "Stay Hungry," should you buy "Still Hungry."
If you're a die hard Twisted fan, definitely, "Stay Hungry" is what Twisted Sister became then.
"Still Hungry" is what they are now and if this is anything to go by, once more a relevant force to be reckoned with.
As I said earlier, it was an extremely brave move reworking a classic album, a move that has paid off in spades.
